The ocean floor, its vast majority unexplored, a plurality unobserved, glares not upon the celestial. Orion, not an archer, but a fisherman; Ursa Major a tardigrade under a microscope; all the Pleiades, married to wives up there; Polaris, someday as the earth tilts, will no longer point us north. Life could persist for millennia in hydrothermal vents in the absense of the star closest to it, and we stargazers, long dead, would never know. The obsession with the eldritch, that Hermetic maxim of 'as above, so below,' could it be love? Could, amidst whalesong, there be more than sirens' cries?

The ocean holds out for the sky.
